Scuttlebutt — An early 19th century nautical term that does deserve a brief explanation. “Water for immediate consumption on a sailing ship was conventionally stored in a scuttled butt: a butt (cask) which had been scuttled by making a hole in it so the water could be withdrawn. Since sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became Navy slang for gossip or rumors.”
The rumor, the gossip, the hearsay, the chitchat, the grapevine, the buzz — No matter how we say it, spreading rumors can be damaging. On the other hand, it can be a source of free marketing/advertising. It can direct attention (good or bad) where it would otherwise not have been ruminated.
