For reasons having to do with product integrity, unless there’s a big name and reputation behind it, a voice-over artist’s identity is more often subdued from the public. On the other hand, film actors who do voice work are credited accordingly. Morgan Freeman is our number one modern voice-over hero. He holds 292 credits at IMDB for being HIMSELF! And we find 37 voice-over and narration credits in his ACTING portfolio. Consequent to the American passion for the film industry, some might consider him the ‘real’ first black president for his role as President Beck in Deep Impact (1998). So it’s ‘hail to the voice-actor chief’ before we press on and discuss the others.
Some other publically recognized voices are Sam Elliott (Dodge Ram and Coors commercials), James Earl Jones (Darth Vader from Star Wars, Mufasa from The Lion King), Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy various, American Dad! various), Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson), Tress MacNeille (The Simpsons various, Futurama various). There are many others, but let’s dial back a few generations.
Some legendary voices from the past are: Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III from Gilligan’s Island, Mister Magoo), Don Adams (Maxwell Smart from Get Smart, Tennessee Tuxedo cartoon), Don LaFontaine (movie trailers; his trademark: “In a world”). But our most honorable mention belongs to Mel Blanc aka “The Man of Thousand Voices” (Bugs Bunny, various Warner Bros. cartoons). There’s a famous story that illustrates how important these characters were to him: “After a horrible car wreck in 1961 left him in a semi-comatose state, the doctors were only able to get a response from him after a few weeks by addressing him as Bugs Bunny, prompting him to respond (while semi-conscious), “Myeeeeh. What’s up, Doc?”
